Readers from all over the world join in discussions on previous Surveys. Titled players, correspondence players and club players shed their light on opening developments and search for the truth together. With contributions by Jacob Aagaard, Viacheslav Zakhartsov, Nenad Sulava, and many others.

Sosonko’s Corner

What do chess opening experts have in common with psychoanalysts, conductors, pianists? Genna Sosonko shows new examples of extreme preparation by the likes of Viswanathan Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, Levon Aronian and Sergey Karjakin, and gives some surprising advice on ways to avoid it.

Book Reviews

In his reviews, Glenn Flear writes on Evgeny Sveshnikov’s essential ‘mega-manuscript’ on ‘The Complete c3 Sicilian’, published by New In Chess itself. Next, he shows how well-known theoretician Lubomir Ftacnik has based an entire repertoire on that Variation of Variations (i.e. the Najdorf) in ‘The Sicilian Defence’. More solid stuff is Lars Schandorff’s ‘The Caro-Kann’, although the Dane also shows how Black can play aggressively. Finally, Flear read Cyrus Lakdawala’s ‘play the London system’ with pleasure, but he concludes with a grave warning.
